We all go through hard times as business owners. Whether we’re having a few lean months, or there’s some deals that didn’t go through the way that we thought they would. Maybe you’ve had back-to-back issues with employees, or had some kind of catastrophe slide across your desk.
Either way, here’s a gentle reminder of exactly what your business is.
Your business is an opportunity. It’s a chance at a better future for yourself. And then after that, it’s a chance for your family, friends and other loved ones. You get to custom design the life that you want, and bring everyone you love up with you.
It’s an opportunity to foster new relationships, and to give others in the community around you their own chances at a better life. You create jobs and lifestyles for passionate people in your circles – and you’re all to thank.
You’re the one who this all rests on – it’s on your shoulders.
When the story is written, well after you’re gone – it’s your name that they’re going to write about. So, if you feel like giving up, and you’ve been dragged through the dirt more times than you can count – let me take this opportunity to ask you: why do you do what you do?
This will generally change and evolve for all of us. I mean, shit – for me, when I started my business – it was because my niece and my dad had just died, and they couldn’t start a business. I then got to thinking, what if I was about to die and I hadn’t done this?
I dug down and did everything that I could.
Soon after that, I started to do it for the living people around me – for Emma and for my brother, and Jon and my mum. Anyone around me who could benefit from what I was building.
Now, in a season of change and challenges – I find myself building and developing new whys. The why will always change and expand – no matter what, but you do always need to have two ingredients: the why you do what you do, and the unconditional love for what you do.
With these two things, you can’t fall so hard you don’t get back up again – you just keep getting back up.
So what is your why? And do you still love what you do? These two things will push you through the hard times, and make you smile with gratitude during the good times.
Your business is a beacon of light and hope in a dark night, for a lot of people. The bigger you grow and the more you do – the more you’re able to share your impact and actually make a difference in the world.
And that’s what we’re really all here for, isn’t it? The cavemen made markings in their caves – they created. Why? Why did they even do that? Was it because they wanted to let people that came after them know that they existed?
We can hypothesize and guess. My guess is yes. Is it so?
If you’re passionate about what you do, and you own a business – remember that you’re leaving your mark on the society that you inhabit, and that it’s up to you to push through – to stand up and never back down.
I believe in you, your family and friends believe in you, and the world needs what you do. The world needs the passion and drive that you had when you started this whole thing.
So keep doing what you do best. Give yourself some love, and don’t forget to smile. Appreciate the simple things, and always ask yourself why you’re doing this thing.
To Your Success,
